OS X running doggedly slow?

Suggested fixes:

1. Load up Activity Monitor
2. Sort the process list by Real Mem -- perhaps you can close something taking up tons of RAM, such as Firefox?
3. Now click System Memory near the bottom
4. Look at Inactive Memory -- if it's larger than, say, 100 MB: open Terminal and type "purge"
